Community pushes back against proposed battery facility

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WKHM) — A proposed battery energy storage facility in Summit Township is moving ahead after unanimous approval from the township’s Planning Commission Tuesday night.

The project, led by Aypa Power of Austin, Texas, would occupy 13 acres on Purdy Drive next to a Consumers Energy substation. The facility is designed to store electricity during low-demand hours and release it back to the grid when usage peaks.

Developers say the site plan includes stormwater management and landscaping to reduce visibility. Some nearby residents, however, raised concerns about wetlands, safety, and potential impacts on property values.

The land is zoned agricultural, and the project still needs final approval from the Summit Township Board of Trustees in the coming weeks.
