Annual City of Jackson Deer Harvest Begins This Weekend

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The annual Jackson Deer Harvest starts on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in and around Ella Sharp Park and the Cascades Golf Course to manage deer population in the area.

Jackson City Mayor Daniel Mahoney said that while the deer harvest window is technically open through mid-March, it’s expected to wrap up this weekend based on prior harvests.

City Manager Jonathan Greene emphasized that city leadership is confident that Aaron’s Nuisance Animal Control will be able to get the job done in a satisfactory manner.

Venison that is collected from the deer harvest will be donated to local food pantries to help support families in the community.

This weekend’s deer harvest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and last until 7 a.m. this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (January 16-19).

Numerous street closures will be happening during the harvest in the area as well. Street closures during harvest hours include:

  • West Hickory Avenue and Fourth Street
  • West Hickory Avenue and Horton Road
  • Stonewall Drive and Oakwood Drive
  • East Hickory Avenue and Oakwood Drive
  • Elmdale Drive and Birchwood Drive
  • Probert Road and Maplewood Drive

“This program reflects community feedback and a long-term approach to maintaining a healthy balance between wildlife, public spaces, and resident safety,” said Kelli Hoover, Director of Parks and Recreation.

“Our department plans to conduct managed harvests annually where needed, while continuing to evaluate other areas that may benefit from population control.”
