Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — An elderly woman died and another passenger was described as in critical condition as a result of a single-vehicle crash in Jackson County on Tuesday (March 17) afternoon.
At approximately 12:26 p.m., authorities responded to the 11000 block of Sharon Valley Road following reports of a serious accident.
The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff (JCSO) says the initial investigation suggests that a black 2022 Ford Explorer was traveling on Sharon Valley Road when the driver, a 69-year-old male from Canton, lost control of the vehicle on the icy roadway. The vehicle subsequently left the pavement and struck a tree.
All three occupants of the vehicle were transported to Henry Ford Hospital.
The JCSO confirms that a 93-year-old female passenger from Dearborn succumbed to her injuries as a result of the crash, and a second passenger remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Inclement weather and hazardous road conditions are considered primary contributing factors, and investigators say they have not found evidence to suggest drugs or alcohol played a role.
The JCSO thanked the Napoleon Township Police, Jackson Community Ambulance, and the Napoleon Township Fire Department for their assistance at the scene.
The crash remains under active investigation by the JCSO Accident Reconstruction Team.
Anyone seeking further information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Sergeant Huttenlocker at (517) 768-7931.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of those involved in this afternoon’s tragedy,” said Sheriff Gary Schuette in a statement.
“Losing a member of our community, or a visitor to our county, is a pain felt by us all. We ask that the public keep these families in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
“This incident serves as a somber reminder of how quickly road conditions can change during Michigan winters; we urge everyone to travel with extreme caution when ice is present.”
